There is nothing sadder or more glorious than the
realization that they just don't write lines such as
"Bang that head like a gypsy of sin" anymore . . . .
Okay, sure, it'd be easy to wax nostalgic about Nasty
Savage and how they were this and that at a time when
metal was doing such and such, but the fact is that's
not necessary because this, a six-track release
featuring the Florida band's original 1984 demo plus
two brand new tracks (and folks, the lads don't sound
like they've aged a day in all these years), states
far more in the first few notes of "Savage Desire"
than any black-clad, moist-palmed scribe high on a pot
of coffee and a graduate degree ever could.
The new material shines brightly, enough to make you
believe that the reunion album (rumored to be in the
works) will be worthwhile. "Sardonic Mosaic" proves
something a roof-raising raunchy trip through the
metal gauntlet, while "Wage Of Mayhem (Part One)"
provides a fairly thorough history of the band for
newcomers. Of the old material, three of the tracks
are absolute winners ("Unchained Angel," "Savage
Desire" and "XXX," which I'm glad to have on CD as my
old tape copy of this song having long ago
disappeared), the fourth, "Witches Sabbath," works
well enough but comes across mostly as a young band
trying to write an obligatory horror rock number.
(Everyone had to have one in those days.)
If you've never heard Nasty Savage before, you ought
to treat yourself. I'm not going to say more than
this: You'll never forget them. If you're an old fan
or just remember them from the days when vocalist
"Nasty" Ronnie used to grace the pages of now-defunct
metal mags, it's time you got back in touch with your
roots.
