Turisas: Battle Metal (Deluxe Edition Re-Issue)

In 2004 when these Finnish metalists initially release the album Battle Metal it not only became a huge hit, its title also became synonymous with the genre of music it represented. Turisas had found a blending of power metal, folk and symphonic rock that blazed a trail that many were to follow. Century Media has re-issued this dynamic and historic work with a very nice package that includes bonus live tracks and a video. This album is epic and bombastic on a scale that laid waste to anything else out at the time. Sit back and enjoy one of the best discs in the genre with a cup of mead and try to resist the temptation to rape and pillage your community!

This album really captures the warrior spirit. Regal and majestic, it takes you back to an ancient time when you met you enemy at the end of a sword not the end of a missile silo. There is something about fighting in this way that has a sense of honor and the band captures this perfectly.

When the majestic "Victoriae & Triumphi Dominus" calls you to war with all it's pomp and grandiose splendor, you will answer the call! This regal orchestrated intro depicts the ancient warriors preparing for battle. It sets the tone for what is coming. A masterpiece that is easily one of the best offerings you will hear in this type of music. The band is able to create a sound that puts you right in the middle of all the action. Not only that, they are able to take you back in time. Fusing the old and new, they bring to life the romantic era of the Nordic warrior. From the battlefield to the pub and even at rest, Turisas shows you just what the life of a warrior was in this long ago time.

Using the blend of traditional instruments such as recorder, udu, accordion and violin mixed with the heavy guitars and keyboards of today, the band started something that is as habit forming as any drug. Since the time they have put out this disc many have tried to build on the formula they created. Some have done well, so have not. Yet, there is only one Turisas and they defined the term Battle Metal.

The bonus tracks for this disc are a remake of the song "Battle Metal" and two live cuts. Each is a treat. From what I have seen and heard, these guys are something to witness live. The video that is also included on the disc confirms this. It is for the remake of "Battle Metal" once more and they did something very cool. They asked the fans to send in video of them doing anything that is related to Turisas and their music. This is interwoven with scenes of them on stage. It is a nice touch and one way to say thank you to the fans.

I am glad to have the chance to revisit one of the pioneer discs of this genre. It is one that will be played time and time again as it is truly one of the best of its kind.
