Suddenly, there he was, Lucky Singh, giving us three new releases in three totally different genres. First off is the progressive metal release he made with his fellow Brit Kevin Barlett, titled Project 8105. These two guys have been at it for 6 years now and this is what that collaboration has given us. Dream Theater like progressive metal combined with the rhetoric of Queensr˙che's Operation Mindcrime.
Singh is the main man behind Project 8105 doing all the guitar work and most of the song writing. This isn't his first attempt at some serious publicity though, as he recently entered the British talent show, Guitar Idol '09. Singh is a clear descendant of Steve Vai's style of guitar playing. Throw in a healthy dose of Hendrix and you're pretty much set for some great guitar work. Singh does deliver that and he seems to be a great guitarist in the making. Though Project 8105 is a concept album and has a pretty decent storyline, there is too much talking. The rhetoric, I mentioned earlier, takes the upper hand, which it shouldn't. The music should be central. Sometimes you get the idea that you're listening to a play on the radio. Surely that wasn't their goal. I get a huge Operation Mindcrime vibe though the music doesn't sound like Queensr˙che. It sounds more like the style of the band of another Vai-esque guitarist, John Petrucci's Dream Theater.
This is a well composed effort by a 'band' that is pretty new and chose to do it independently. Nothing wrong with that, but I guess they could use some more exposure. If you're not afraid of independent progressive metal releases and are up for some hot prospects in the progressive metal genre, move over to their website to find out more.
