Greek eight piece Night On Earth cite a multitude of influences that include Portishead, Bjork, Kyuss and Tom Waits and certainly with Second Hand they have presented an album that switches between a diverse range of styles and moods. With live shows accompanied by visuals, short films and performance this is very much what I would describe as performance art as opposed to a band in the traditional sense of the word. Shorn of the visuals the album still holds up reasonably well with a high emphasis on improvisation that takes in heart-rendering melancholia of "Lafyra" (which builds to a sweeping crescendo) to the freeform trippy jazz of "Crocus" and "Dawn". Vocalist Sophia really shines throughout and at times evoke the qualities you would associate with someone like Nina Simone; immaculate, focused, ambient and passionate.
Melodramatic, mellow and laid back this is a very much a late night album that could be used to provide an effective soundtrack to an old black and white movie.
