Children Of Bodom: Skeleton's In The Closet

CoB has been known to do a very strange cover song here and there. For those that like this kind of stuff, the band has given you enough to drown in remake heaven. Here you get 17 eclectic offerings that range from the very good to the ridiculous. This disc does offer one thing that I thought I would never be able to do. That is to put the terms death metal and comic relief in the same sentence.

Kicking off with a version of the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic "Looking Out My Back Door" that is interesting on the first pass but wears out its welcome in a hurry. With a few notable exceptions this disc is destined to be one that you pull out just to send the Kenny Rogers or Britney Spears fans running away as fast as possible.

There are times when the band seems to be actually taking themselves serious as with covers of Sepultura and Slayer which are impressive and more along the lines of what a fan might expect. They also give a few very good unexpected moments along the way too. The remake of Pat Benatar's "Hell Is For Children" is a keeper along with a brutal version of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell". They also do proper justice to King Diamond, Iron Maiden and The Ramones along the way.

There is also the ridiculous where they give you a death metal spin with tongue firmly planted in cheek as with the afore mentioned CCR but also with over the top versions of Kenny Rogers "Just Dropped In(To See What Condition My Condition Was In), Johnny Cash's "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" and Britney Spears "Opps!...I Did It Again".

There are a few cool moments on this album but they are very spaced out and the majority of the disc is nothing more than a conversation piece. It is obvious that they are trying to buy some time with the fans until their next release. I just hope that they don't alienate too many of them!

My Score:

This band has not been able to reclaim the sound the had on Hate Crew Deathroll. Trashed, Lost and Strungout, Are you Dead Yet?, Chaos Ridden Years - Stockholm Knockout Live all were really rushed and way below acceptable. On Bloodrunk they made a little bit of a comeback, but this cd is a joke. $14.99 price point on songs that have already been released before and not even done in a way that you can respect the band. The vocals really blow!!!
The competition out there is way to tight for this garbage. They really need to pull something good out of their ass because they are just full of sh@@.
