Released via the Russian label RAIG, USSSY are comprised of three musicians from the Moscow based band I Am Above On The Left. Their latest self titled independent disc is an unrelenting sixty minute exercise in straight ahead, industrial noise core. The trio on this recording which includes Pavel Eremeev (baritone guitar, voice), Artem Galkin (guitar, voice) and Sergei Ledovski on drums, create more fucked up noise on this album than some bands with double the amount of musicians. The rhythms are punishing and often fractured, the jagged sounding guitars are akin to getting an ice pick straight between the eyes, and the vocals often amount to nothing more than incoherent screams of madmen. Three quarters of this disc sails quickly along with a distinct punk/ hardcore / industrial sense of urgency as quite a few of the tracks clock in anywhere between two and three minutes. However, the longer sonic experiments such as the twelve minute "Wire" and the final song (?) "Adieu, Thrush!", which comes at a whopping eiighteen minues, is where things take an even more dramatic and interesting turn. "Adieu" in particular closes off with almost ten minutes of nothing more than droning feedback.
This disc isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea and to be honest it's not something I would reach for too often. That being said however, I can appreciate the raw, primal, expreimental approach these musicians are taking with their music and there are moments of pure, unadulterated aggression here that resonated with me. The sixty five minute running time is also a little too much to handle, especially all in one sitting.
