Reece: Universal Language

One time Accept and current Gypsy Rose vocalist David Reece steps away from the band format to deliver his debut solo album on Metal Heaven. What you get here is very much what you would expect from someone with Reece's experience; a melodic hard rock release that highlights powerful melodies, insistent hooks and Reece's Coverdale-esque delivery. Former U.D.O. guitarist Andy Susemihl proves an able collaborator and producer in addition to serving up some tasty riffs with the band rounded out by bassist Jochen Funders (Holy Moses) and drummer Stefan Schwarzmann (also of U.D.O.).

There is a mellow blues-edge to the likes of "I'll Remember You" and "Flying Too Close To The Flame" that provides a nice contrast when compared with the more direct, straight ahead rockers "Before I Die" and "All The Way". Reece is clearly still a vocalist of considerable range and ability and he is able to lift some fairly average material such as "Fantasy Man" and "The River"; so much so that if they were sung by an average vocalist they would be entirely unremarkable.

Universal Language is consistent throughout but is just lacking that special spark in the songwriting department to make it rise above the pack and be classed as a truly essential release.
