Suit of Lights: Bacteria

Something of a belated follow-up to 2005's debut album Bacteria is characterised by smooth songwriting, laid back grooves and uncluttered arrangements and has such broad appeal that it could well propel Suit of Lights into the mainstream. SoL frontman Joe Darone started out drumming with pop-punk outfit The Fiendz and is also a successful graphic artist having worked with the likes of Van Halen, Madonna and Agnostic Front. SoL is very much Darone's brainchild and he is responsible for all of the songwriting credits and has assembled an eclectic supporting cast that includes bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle) and horns from Jamie Egan (ska outfit Catch 22).

The songs here are heartfelt, thoughtful and mature with the musicians content in their role of quiet understatement, indeed they only really move up a gear with the punchy "Halfway Houses of the Holy". Darone has a sweetly harmonic voice that could draw favourable comparison with Glen Tilbrook from Squeeze. Other highlights are "Evolve Head On" and "Unfaithful Arms", mellow moments of introspection that are both compelling and effective.

File under easy listening.
