Dusted Angel: Dusted Angel

Stoner/doom band Dusted Angel formed in 2008, and hails from Santa Cruz CA. This debut EP is a collection of just 3 tracks. The band delivers the usual stoner fare, meaning this is some down-tuned guitar riffs, with a heavy bottom-end and some barely intelligible screamed vocals. The opening "The Thorn" builds off an ominous opening chord in a very Sabbath-like manner. "Valium 5" follows up with a much slower, heavier, more deliberate riff and is probably the best of the 3 tracks, despite its brevity. "Purple Jesus" closes out the EP in a more uptempo, more accessible sounding way.

Overall, this is some pretty standard stoner rock. Decent, but not anything to really make one sit up and take particular notice. The production is very muddy, and the drums don't have all the kick they should, making this EP sound like one of the thousands of garage bands out there trying to raise their voices above the pack. Apparently a full length release is in the works. I'd like to hear what these guys could do in a longer format and with a bit more money and time in a studio before passing any real judgment on the band.
