Normally, I'm pretty excited when Paragon Records is announcing their upcoming releases. This time though, with Dark Celebration, I didn't get the "sounds good/looking forward to this one" type of feeling.
Death Metal is not my favorite genre, and I normally find this music pretty boring, even if I ran across some nice exceptions in the past. Phlegethon: the Transcendence of Demon Lords is nothing more than your average Death music. Clocking in at less than 30 minutes, the album with a nice cover art is bound to please the head bangers amongst our readers. Short, kicking, brutal, technical and somewhat melodic are forming the essence of those songs. Dual vocals are offered: sick rasps and low tone growls. Oddly enough, I preferred the latter. The fact of having two guitar players on board saved this disc from being boring. Indeed, the lead guitar work is adding a good dose of melodic colors to their sound. Besides, guitar solos are present on just about every song, which benefit the compositions too. Tracks like: "Ocularis/Infernum" and "Infra Dark" are worth mentioning. I didn't find any songs worth the great or outstanding mention, although none of them are really bad as such. To be frank, I found them pretty much sounding the same.
Anyways, as I said before, this is not my type of metal. Most likely, the long hair dude will enjoy head banging to this, but I personally look for more subtlety from Paragon Records.
