Let's face it, if the country you hail from is in darkness most of the year then it's only natural that your music shadows the environment you live in. As expected Spiritus Mortis from the daylight starved Finland are not going to perform happy colourful chorus driven party rock! It is as the name suggests Dark,Doom laden pieces of foot dragging metal, to be fair there's some pace to opener 'The Man Of Steel' which comes across sounding a little 'Manowar' in places. From there on in the only thing in competition for pace is a 10 year coma! The eight minute 'Curved Horizon' for example, plodding on like an asthmatic donkey with a heavy load, you feel the need for a little more pace without compromising the doom or weight of guitars in any way. Sami Hynninen delivers a great vocal performance and now and again there is a nod to Black Sabbath, Down and in some tracks The Sword, however by the time the title track came along I found myself reaching for the Antidepressants and craving colour. Final track 'Perpetual Motion' soon snaps you out of your black slumber and injects a little pace back to proceedings. Spititus Mortis have created a Dark Doom filled slab of metal, the only bright element will be the reflection from the CD when you remove it from it's case.
