…and now for something COMPLETELY different…
Well, maybe not completely different. French band Sebkha-Chott follow in the footsteps of zany French bands like La STPO. " De La Persistence De La Mythologie Chotienne en ??? Vélos" is an album that throws everything but the kitchen sink at the listener.
The disc begins with a series of phone messages left on an answering machine. These messages range from wrong numbers, to drunken rants, to mundane everyday occurences. The music itself does not begin until track #49. Once it does though, we're presented a mish-mash of sounds and styles. Crunching guitars get overlapped with a horn section. The band jumps from style to style in an almost schizophrenic fashion. Elements of Zappa-like fusion, parts that sound a little like Magma, hip-hop, free jazz, klezmer, Eastern music, and even a little heavy metal create a tornado of musical mayhem.
The overall results are a patchwork album which doesn't seem to have any real consistency to it. The band's attempts at zaniness seem, in this reviewer's opinion, totally contrived. The whole thing comes across as a novelty act, and not something meant to be taken seriously. While I'm not opposed to this approach, I just have to wonder where the staying power is. The disc has certain moments that really work well within just about every song but the band tends to veer off into too many odd directions. I've spun this record just enough times to write this review. It will now be relegated to the forgotten pile. You mileage will definitely vary with this release.
