Lost to Antiquity is one of those CDs that I kept putting aside; not being in any rush to cover, thinking it is not especially interesting. Well, surprisingly, this is quite the opposite. Formed in 1997 by guitarist Caleb Duern, In Memorium has been in and out of duty and only releasing their debut in 2004, From Misery…Comes Darkness. After a five years hiatus, the darkened souls are emerging back with a solid Black Metal disc.
What strikes you at first is the ferocious hyper blasting style with its intricacy and band tightness. Their song structure is repetitive to a certain degree, as well as melodic. Then comes something tastier: juicy power riffs, clean arpeggios and wicked vocals on a great Black Metal song called: "One Above All". In Memorium are throwing in equal parts of fast viciousness and moderate moments with atmosphere in the following composition, "Beneath the Endless Ocean". "Erosion" is where crunchiness and power riffing, as well as those wicked vocals are ruling. I was a bit surprised to see the next song, "The Awakening" following in the same foot steps. I noticed a discrete touch of keyboards at the beginning of this album, but the closing track brings this instrument up front, while shedding a dark atmosphere much relevant to Black Metal arts.
Lost to Antiquity demonstrates all of what this band can do: mixing fast viciousness with crushing Doom and melodic atmosphere, all this in one single song! An album worth looking into.
