Assaulter: Salvation Like Destruction

My first impression when I saw the cover art was to think it was a gothic album. Then the name appears to be more relevant to heavy metal /thrash. Well, in fact it is none of the above, though perhaps you'll find some thrashy influences here and there.

Salvation Like Destruction is another of those 'so so' albums. Nothing great or super bad to hear on this CD. This is a seven piece disc made of somewhat melodic Black Metal with a slightly raw production. The musicianship is good, but their songwriting lacks maturity. Assaulter are better at writing the "in your face" type of metal. On this album, they are trying do something more intricate with a certain clumsy approach. This results in a song structure being a bit confusing at times. Mid to fast paces are the tempos; raspy the vocals; tremolo picking galore with frequent solos as well as nice crushing riffs thrown in once and a while. The band is trying to make some more refined songs with more intricate time signature, oriental leads, a bit of an epic feel and samplings. Those elements are not too bad in songs like: "Proselytiser", "and "Awe of Fire". Those are worth checking out. On the other hand, in some other intricate moments, the lead guitar and tremolo pickings appear as if they were stumbling against the fast rhythmic section.

Not to avoid totally, but nothing to go crazy over either.
