When I said that Pulverised's latest haul was not so bad, Burial Hordes was a good example of my saying. This time, a bit of information was on the slipcase. This act was formed in 2001 by Nightspirit (vocals), N.E.C.R.O. (guitar & bass) and Adrahil on programming. A couple demos came out before their 2005 debut, War Revenge and Total Annihilation, with a complete line-up this time. Now, the war machine is plowing new grounds with Devotion to Unholy Creed.
Burial Hordes claim to be uncompromising Old School Black Metal. Their sound is raw, without falling into the awfully bad, demo-ish type, mind you. Could we call this melodic & wicked Old School Black Metal? Why not! In any cases, without being outstanding, Devotion to Unholy Creed does not only have a pretty name, it also contains a few treats. Fast tempos are being counter balanced by moderate movements, and this disc even has a bit of ambiences too. Some sort of a live feel is present in a few occasions. This is being caused by little over-dubs. For instance, when the guitar player is doing a tremolo picking run, no riffs are backing him up. A bit of harmonious arpeggios have been thrown in once and a while. The vocals are usually of the ghostly style, backed by some wicked growls. Few samplings and keyboard parts are adding a dramatic touch too. The juicy riffs can become catchy, with a certain rock edge.
Devotion to Unholly Creed is not bad at all, and includes some good Black Metal. Tunes to look out for are: "God's Cutthroat", "Splendid Destruction", "Stench of Immortal Destruction" and the title track.
