Pictures For Susceptible Housewives is a new release from a band called Rubycone. I was probably expecting to hear vocals, not being aware of the band's music, but this is predominately instruments only with some voice overs, being mostly of the heavy progressive rocking kind.
Rubycone have put together some likable catchy tunes on Pictures For Susceptible Housewives. Their playing is complex to an extent, but certainly no over the top technical wizardry or progwankery as some tend to call it; instead Rubycone is relying on more accessible music, no doubt being easier for many to digest.
Performance wise the guitars of Romones and Norfeus are a strong point of this album, as they keep the listener entertained with their handiwork. Completing Rubycone's lineup are the talents of bass player and band founder VStas, and their potent drummer known as Primus Man, both are also kept busy and serve up entertaining performances. Like that on "Fisherman's Story" one of the albums best, which has a great bass/drum groove, or the ballsy "Vikings Love Horses ". The production is also very good; each member really gets to standout in the mix.
Pictures For Susceptible Housewives is quite simply a strong collection of catchy and enjoyable songs from Rubycone, and I am sure this CD will indeed appeal to many.
