Geist: Galeere

From the ever blossoming land of Germany, Geïst is presenting their new opus. I never heard of this act before, but then again, isn't that country a bottomless treasure chest!

Galeere is an album that grabbed me from the beginning with its atmosphere. This is subtle Black Metal with a certain ghostly feel. This work is basically a concept album based around the vast and hostile aspects of the sea. Certain samplings (sonar, waves and ship sounds) will make you feel like being near a ghost ship, on a foggy and cold night. Dark/ambient keyboards are introducing every composition, placing the listener in the vicinity of that shadowy vessel. I always appreciate a crafty and intelligent use of keyboards in Black Metal, creating all of those great somber ambiences. Another nice side of Galeere , is the fact that, in many instances, moderate tempos were chosen. There are frequent faster moments, but they never become furious as such, much to my liking. The guitar playing is superbly done, full of chunky riffs as well as harmonious leads and arpeggios. As a little "extra", Geïst treated me by including a classical guitar in the epic, long lasting pleasure (15:44mins) called "Unter toten Kapitänen". Opener/title track and "Einen Winter auf See" contain all of the great elements described before, which are the results of crafty song writing skills.

Galeere will take you from anywhere and leave you in the middle of nowhere, but it is worth the trip!
