Lion Music churns out some of the most consistently
interesting guitar and progressive music in Europe and
Scandinavia(that's arguably where the largest number
of their artists come from). They have their hits
(OHM) and their misses, but digging into a Lion record
is always an adventure. Such is the case with
Winterlong, headed by Swedish guitar maestro Thorbjorn Englund. Featuring searing guitar work from Mr. E. as well as vocals from Mikael Holm (often reminiscent of Ronnie James Dio during the Rainbow years), The Second Coming, is a wild and enjoyable tour of whatever this world will finally come to.
Unlike some guitar-led projects, the lyrics here are
concerned with real emotions and large concerns that
come of as well-informed, insightful. Most interesting
among them is perhaps "We'll Be Immortals," a kind of
meditation on the origins of life on this planet. And
while the record will keep you thinking, it won't stop
you from becoming elevated and casting your eyes on
the celestial body from which Englund's guitar notes
clearly emanate.
