Devils Whorehouse: Blood and Ashes
After a five year hiatus Devils Whorehouse return with a new line-up and album number two on Regain Records. Starting life briefly as Misfits / Samhain covers outfit before issuing debut EP The Howling and both of these bands are evidently still an influence not just in terms of the frenzied riffs and B-movie horror lyrics but also a nod to the vocal styling of Glenn Danzig. As you might have guessed by now then all of these aspects combine to rightly tag Devils Whorehouse with the 'Horror Punk' label. What differentiates Blood and Ashes from the aforementioned bands and places this album firmly in 2009 is that the quality production ensures that there are no blurry guitars or lyrics lost in the final mix and the atmosphere throughout is far less claustrophobic than you might imagine.
What could have been a collection of Mid-tempo chuggers is accelerated by the tribal beats and black humour in the creative lyrics in the likes of 'Werewolf' and 'Smell of the Ancient Ones'; vocalist Maelstrom possessing all of the necessary traits to ensure a menacing and malevolent delivery. If your driving back from a horror movie or planning a soundtrack for October 31st then Devils and Ashes is an album that can make every day seem like Halloween. Available now via Regain Records this is one for those who appreciate their music with a dark and eerie twist.
