Velvet Cacoon: Genevieve

The re-release of the debut album from this rather unique band will leave you with as many questions as the confusing and blatantly misleading so called history of the group. After listening to the album a few times, I can see why they might not really want the public to know their true identities.

Falling somewhere between a soundtrack to watching paint dry and an old vinyl record being played at the wrong speed, this work really is one only for the aficionados of the "shoegazing" or ambient noise type of sound. Simply put, other than a few spots where they manage to show a melodic structure on the album, most of it sounds like a strong wind as heard through your cell phone.

Southern Lord Records, in their press release of the album says that it is packaged in a velvet jacket with the band's logo embossed on it in metal foil. I can't tell you much about this as we were not privy to the actually packaging. We only received the disc itself. The band does have a very cool logo and this sounds like a handsome wrapper but if you need an example of; don't judge a book by its cover, this is it. You may end keeping the jacket and doing as I did and make a Frisbee trainer for the dog with the disc itself.
