Chris Lopez (vocals), Rich Kotsko (guitars), Jeremy Aiello (bass), and Mark Routt (drums)- these four rockers are the lineup of new progressive/hard rock group from Flint, Michigan called Episodic. This independently produced release has a live feel at times which certainly suits their material. Episodic has many influences such as Rush, Led Zeppelin, Queensryche, Tool, Kings X and Disturbed, quite a mixture of prog, rock and metal to draw inspiration from.
Their first full length album, Anything But God, is somewhat the upbeat melodic, guitar fueled, mid paced debut. They even throw in an instrumental with "What's Wrong", as the band rock things up on this short number. Title tracks "Anything But Good" rocks out of the box from the onset, before a short lived toning down; there are some nice touches on this one.
"Hit The Ground" is another good upbeat track; "Impulse" is one of the best songs, with a very pleasing guitar riff sure to get your feet tapping. It's also good to hear a bass player for a change, on many albums this is one instrument that gets neglected, and should be utilized for much more than just basic grooves when required. Thankfully Aiello makes his presence known here.
Anything But God is a good debut, from a band that obviously has a lot of fun making music.
