Shadar Logoth: Curse

Formed in 2003 by Eaton (vocals & guitars) and Denson (bass), Shadar Logoth is an American quartet that has released their debut album, Curse, in 2008.

On this CD, you'll hear six pieces of Black Metal. The sound production is somewhere between the raw demo type and the good sounding, actual release when a band is signed to a label (in general I mean). I don't mind the rawness as such, since it usually fits perfectly the cold/stark atmosphere of the Black Metal arts. I would qualify Curse as a melodic Black Metal album. On its track listing, you'll hear elements like distorted guitars; subdued drums, rasps and discrete keyboards. The paces stay mostly in the fast/furious mode, but can occasionally drop to a moderate and more melodic one. During those moments, harmonies are surging from the loudness in the form of clean arpeggios, clean guitar work and also this is where the clean vocals can be heard. Now, about those clean voices, I think the raspy ones are much more appropriate with the musical direction, in this particular situation. The keyboards are adding a nice melodic touch, and they also bring a certain epic edge in some occasions. Tracks like: "Here Lyes: Planet Earth", "The Path to End", "But I Found Gallows Hill" and "The Dread Lord" are where I could listen to their more mature material.

Curse does have some interesting parts, especially in the guitar department, but I would definitely stick with the raspy vocals.
