Finnish death metal band Sotajumala (translated as Wargod) have built up a solid loyal following since founding over ten years ago. Their most recent full length effort and only second overall for their native label Woodcut Records, Teloitus, which means Execution, is a brutal sounding albeit relatively short offering that clocks in at just under forty minutes.
As far as extreme music is concerned I have to say that these eight, incredibly tight sounding, skull crushing compositions are not only executed with razor like precision but more importantly they also sound remarkably fresh as well. This album comes across as a much needed breath of fresh air, or more appropriately a breath of acrid smoke if you like due large in part to the bands decision to largely forgo the traditional blastbeats and straight ahead breakneck tempos. That's not to say there isn't any of these characteristics on display here (see "Oikeutus" or "Arkku Vailla Vainajaa" for example) but the band doesn't rely on these things to dominate or become the backbone of their sound. Instead they concentrate on changing up the tempos and arrangements wherever possible and allowing the multifaceted work of drummer Timo Häkkinen and the pummeling guitar tandem of Kosti Orbinski and Pete Lapio to speak for themselves. All the lyrics are delivered in Finnish by vocalist Mynni Luukkainen who possesses an impressive if not entirely original low, guttural range which nevertheless proves to be just what these caustic anthems require. If you lean towards the sounds of extreme death metal then Teloitus should definitely be able to give you plenty of what you need.
