With another Avantasia studio album tentatively scheduled for the end of the year this consolidation of the two Lost In Space EP's offers a timely opportunity for those who passed them by first time around to find out what they have been missing out on. What you get here is twelve songs that include a diverse selection of cover versions and special guest appearances from usual Avantasia collaborators such as Magnum's Bob Catley and Jorn Lande.
The cover versions are all by and large quite enjoyable, Abba's catchy "Lay All Your Love On Me" being arguably the pick of the bunch although Eric Singer provides a solid vocal on "Ride The Sky", a track that dates back to the early 70's and Lucifer's Friend. The dreary ballad "In My Defense", originally written for Freddie Mercury, is far less impressive and would have been better left off altogether. Of the original material "The Story Ain't Over" packs a punch with its huge chorus and soaring solo and is elevated even further by Catley's striking vocal performance. As long-time Magnum fans will know, Catley always manages to convey storyteller qualities to his vocals and this proves to be no exception. "Promised Land" and "Scary Eyes" are both pretty much standard Power Metal fare and neither are Avantasia at their best but the sweeping cover of Ultravox's "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" proves to be an ideal song for Sammet to cover and he adds passion and emotion that almost rivals the original. An acoustic version of the title track adds a dreamlike quality with effective backing from Amanda Somerville. Scarecrow was a lavish affair and this release will fill in some of the gaps whilst we wait with anticipation for whatever Sammet decides to come up with next.
