Thyrfing: Hels Vite
I have always liked the music of Thyrfing. They are one of the earliest bands I've reviewed the work of. In fact, Vansinnesvisor (2002) was in the first promo pack I got from Candlelight. Now, in 2009, Thyrfing is jumping back with their brand new Viking episode called Hels Vite.
This album introduces their new singer Jens Rydén, formerly of Naglfar. This new vocalist fits extremely well, while bringing a creepy and barbarian tone to the melodic Viking anthems. On Hels Vite, Thyrfing has composed, in most cases, long (7-8 minutes) tracks of powerful Scandinavian metal. On this disc, the bass is quite strong; the drumming loud and pounding and the riffing is what one should expect to hear in Viking music, that is crushing, catchy at times, and of course, epic! The keyboards are present on every song, simply adding an ambient or epic feel, as well as increasing the melodic touch of those compositions. I found the overall feel of this new release a bit more melodic than their previous work. Some acoustic guitars appear in a few appropriate passages. This instrument is always welcome, and also adds a nice folksy edge. Although Hels Vite is quite a pleasant album, a couple songs left me on my appetite ("Isolation" and "Hels Vite"). I can't say that they are bad, but didn't really grab me like the others. On the good side though, tracks like: "En Sista Litania", "Griftefrid" and "Becoming the Eye" are just great numbers. For me, the best song on this disc remains "Fran Stormens Oga", because it involves all the elements that made Thyrfing what they are: a great Viking Metal horde!
