Nichelodeon: Cinemanemico

This is one of the more ambiguous releases we've received here at the Sea in quite awhile. Little info seems to be available about this Italian collective that sounds like: a) it's creating anti-pop music, as its MySpace page suggests; b) it's really better suited to musical theater, because this seems like it could be some sort of performance art that might make more sense with visuals; or c) its members are in their final death throes, and vocalist Claudio Milano will be the first to croak. Of course, it doesn't help that every English description of Nichelodeon we can find is roughly translated from Italian: Do the members of this quartet really mean to call themselves "an insane alternative to entertainment"?

Anyway, this is manic music interrupted by solo piano pieces, jarring and tortured vocals that include operatic screams, Zappa- and Crimson-like musical interludes and an utterly overwhelming sense of bizarreness. The most anxiety-ridden and annoying of these 10 songs (two have English titles, but all are sung in Italian) is "La Torre Piu Alta," nearly 10 minutes of well, we're not sure. Be careful how, when and where you listen to this thing, because Cinemanemico has the potential to grate on your nerves like nothing you've ever heard.
