Beck, Jeff: Performing This Week...Live at Ronnie Scott's (DVD)

If you fell in love with the CD version of Jeff Beck's Performing This Week...Live at Ronnie Scott's, be prepared to be even more enamored with the companion DVD to that set. Filmed during the final night of a week long string of gigs at the famous London jazz club in 2007, this DVD features additional songs not included on the CD. With a red hot band that includes drum veteran Vinnie Colaiuta, 22 year old bass phenom Tal Wilkenfeld (who looks like she's barely out of high school but can flat out PLAY), and keyboard player Jason Rebello, Beck and Co. tear into classics such as "Beck's Bolero", "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" (featuring an amazing solo from Wilkenfeld), "Behind the Veil", "Nadia", "Led Boots", "Scatterbrain", and many others, including surprising renditions of The Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Eternity's Breath" and Billy Cobham's "Stratus". One of the essential reasons to seek out this DVD are for the songs featuring some guest artists, such as Eric Clapton on "Little Brown Bird" and "You Need Love" (though Beck completely smokes him), Imogen Heap, who lends her Sade-ish vocals to "Blanket" and a rollicking version of "Rollin' and Tumblin' ", and Joss Stone, who gives a gutsy performance on "People Get Ready". The most touching part of the whole set however is the closing number "Where Were You", Beck pulling all sorts of emotional and gripping sounds out of his Stratocaster on one of the tenderest songs he has ever written. After all the guitar acrobatics coming before it, encompassing rock, jazz, funk, and blues, it's a fitting ending to the show.

Included as a bonus are an extensive interview with Jeff Beck, where talks about the shows at Ronnie Scott's, as well as his bandmates, who by the way also get to comment on the gigs as well. This is an essential DVD purchase for anyone into one of the true legends of rock and roll.
