Zodiak — a doomy, hypnotic and thoroughly intoxicating band of probable post-metal derelicts who know a thing or two about creating lush yet disturbing soundscapes — includes past and present members of such Philadelphia-area bands as Rosetta, Balboa, Javelina, Slacks and Lickgoldensky. (Don't worry; I don't know who all of 'em are, either.) With aggressive, synthesized vocals that fluctuate between Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation and both hard and soft Opeth, these guys rage against the machine — and everything else — for 31 brain-buzzing minutes on Sermons. The highlight happens to be the trippy title track, which only partially prepares listeners for the behemoth that is "Wouldn't Wait," which borrows equally from Dead Soul Tribe and early Black Sabbath. That said, a little more creativity with the packaging, beginning with a legible track listing, would have helped these doomsters gain more favor with the audience they're sure to find.
