Lynn Stokes & Sol Surfers: Terra Nocturne

The nine songs on Terra Nocturne float in the hazy shadows of mellow Gilmour/Waters-era Pink Floyd not that there's anything wrong with that. While it might be a little too sleepy for some tastes, this concept album of sorts inspired "during the course of one particularly lucid evening" (according to the liner notes) captures the essence of what a certain type of progressive-rock fan still wants to hear. Indeed, the 12-and-a-half-minute, sax-fueled "American Dream," which could be an outtake from Wish You Were Here, is powerful enough to make some men weep.

Vocalist/guitarist Lynn Stokes and the Texas-based Sol Surfers look more like a high-energy, bar-jammin' blues-rock outfit than classic progressive rockers. But these guys are for real. As proof, the Progressive Rock Hall of Fame (yes, there really is one in Phoenix, Ariz.) selected Terra Nocturne's strong leadoff track "Sacred Moon's Light" to be featured on its first compilation CD, Soundscapes Volume 1.
