Melody In Captivity is the first instrumental CD from guitarist Brian Maillard, his previous release as a member of the band Dominici. Melody In Captivity has Brian teaming up with his brother and Dominci band mate Yan on drums.
Brian Maillard displays his capacity to create appealing tracks as well as dispensing some scintillating guitar. Once you drop the vocals there's a large gap to fill with something that will retain the listener's attention, not just boring repetition that wont cut it. No problem with this album though, as Melody In Captivity never fails to captivate. There are multiple tracks full of variation and hooks, and it's not all heavy, presenting many tasteful sides to Brian's guitar playing. Yan Maillard kicks the album along with ease, his tasteful/versatile drumming adding to the albums charm, like on track three "A Perfect Lie" he shows impressive utilization of his drum kit.
"Relax In Your Mind" commences with some intense riffage before settling down, "Liberation" is reminisant of Joe Satriani but with some double kick, "Implore" a heavy enjoyable metal chugger, and even though it's not the same, Steve Vai's "Bad Horsie" came to mind, maybe it's the similar crunching guitar sound. The tempo's up for "Wickedness" a faster rocker, album namesake "Melody In Captivity" even has Brian funking(wouldn't want to spell that wrong) things up while Yan grooves it up around him.
Melody In Captivity will appeal to fans of the aforementioned Satriani and Vai plus the likes of Vinnie Moore and other similar type players. Along with the impressive/well received 2008 release of Jeff Loomis - Zero Order Phase that and this one make a great combo for all you instrumental buffs. Let's keep our fingers crossed that it's a sign of more future guitar oriented albums to come of this caliber.
