I just reviewed a Funeral Doom album, and here I am doing a 360 degree spin to work on this crazy music! Just by a quick look at the picture on the cover and you know this is something funny, far away from the cryptal Black Metal realm.
Eccentric is maybe the best word to describe those Frenchmen. Not avant-gardist as such since the biggest influence of Sebkha Chott is Frank Zappa (RIP), especially the first decade, including the Mothers of Invention. Did you see the track listing? I never saw that many songs before, and they all fit on one disc. All this madness last over 74 minutes. Most songs are very short ones, some only last a few seconds, others range in the 3 minute range, and the closing track is the exception at 8:33. Musically, Sebkha Chott demonstrate clearly their intention to follow their own rules by including all of their influences. Basically though, you'll witness a cool blend of jazz/rock & psychedelia in a progressive Zappa-ish sonic structure. Lots of brasses, intricate time signatures, freaking nice vocal harmonies, fuzzed guitars and a healthy dose of insanity went into the construction of this disc. Nigla(h) is entertaining, challenging (not that easy to listen in one sitting), and melodic too. It's like combining Lumpy Gravy, Uncle Meat and The Grand Wazoo on one single, long lasting musical ride.
Nigla(h) is worth the experience, especially if you have an open mind, and even more so if you are a Frank Zappa (R.I.P.) fan.
