Strawberry Fields: Rivers Gone Dry

Strawberry Fields is the latest project from Satellite's Wojtek Szadkowski and one which introduces female vocalist Robin, marking her debut as a singer and lyricist. In addition to providing the music, Szadkowski handles keyboards and drums with the Satellite members Sarhan Kubeisi and Jarek Michalsk on guitars and bass respectively. Rivers Gone Dry is in some way removed from Satellite's art prog style and is very much of a laid back, chilled out vibe that is sample enriched and will have significant appeal for those keen on trance and loops. It is quickly apparent that Robin is an accomplished vocalist and could be favourably compared with the Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan.

Aside from the occasional injection of guitar the music is predominantly keyboard driven; 'Your Story' and 'Close' follow similar structures with gentle verses leading into more powerful choruses. The lengthy title track has a moody undercurrent that gives it a hypnotic feel, Szadkowski allowing time for the atmosphere to build around a strong melody. 'Fool' has a haunting acoustic opening that extends into the albums real gem; Kubesi's guitars play more of a part against a bittersweet lyric. After a very promising start the album drifts a little mid way through with both the understated 'Moon' and 'Beautiful' not quite as immediate. But this proves to be a temporary blip as 'Open Your Eyes' boasts an impressive multi -part vocal arrangement on which Robin really shines and the seven and a half minute 'Flow' provides a satisfying close.

Musically this is an extremely rewarding blend of old and new which suggests a very bright future for Robin and that Szadkowski has unearthed a real talent.
