Covered Call: Money Never Sleeps

Almah, Voodoo Circle, Siebenburgen and Places Of Power, all great releases I've been able to review from Blistering Records in recent months. Well now here's one more, Melodic Rock/Metal has another shining addition in the form of Sweden's Covered Call, debuting with Money Never Sleeps.

Covered Call formed in 2006, their lineup consists of drummer Ronny Svanströmer, guitarist's Morgan Rosenquist & Joel Carlsson, bassist Thomas Thulin, and finally vocalist Thomas Vikström, whose resume includes duties with such legends as Candlemass and Therion. An experienced line-up that have combined their ideas and to come up with the rocker Money Never Sleeps.

Money Never Sleeps is the sort of release that will appeal to more than just us metal fans, in fact, it's more of a modern rocker than metal CD. Catchy tracks like "All Because Of Me", which could easily be heard blasting away on your local radio station, or "All Because Of Me", with its striking chorus, would be a great live track, as would "Shine", which has some fine vocal harmonies and cool riffs. There are many rocking numbers on Covered Call's debut like "Never Again", "Till The End" and "What About Us", all sure to keep the listener entertained.

2009 is looking like a great year for fine Melodic releases, such as Covered Call's Money Never Sleeps.

Covered Call: Money Never Sleeps
Posted by Michael Popke, SoT Staff Writer on 2009-03-31 13:47:02
My Score:

Here's an unexpected one: A melodic hard rock album featuring the former vocalist for – get ready! – Candlemass and Therion. No dark metal here, my friends. Just some feel-good Swedish hard rock from a band named Covered Call that on its debut, Money Never Sleeps, sounds amazingly American. Thomas Vikstrom fronts this quintet that's drawing comparisons to Journey, Bon Jovi and Styx. But we hear more of Survivor ("Never Again") and Alias (the ballad "Anything You Want"), with a little Bonfire ("I Wanna Be Free") and Gotthard ("Nothing At All") tossed in for fun. From rich harmonies ("Shine") to vocal histrionics (the title track), Vikstrom proves adept at singing this type of music.

Adding to the intrigue is the anime-style art and the band's name – an investor term that refers to the day jobs held by some of Covered Call's members. The album's title also makes a lot more sense knowing that.

Fans of any of the groups mentioned above will find plenty on Money Never Sleeps worth celebrating. Nothing here, however, will convince the non-believers.
