Carnophage: Deformed Future // Genetic Nightmare

I've said it before, Unique Leader is a virtual breeding ground of brutal, technical death metal bands, and one of their newer discoveries is Turkish act Carnophage. Their debut Deformed Future//Genetic Nightmare is a pummeling blast of extreme metal, obviously influenced greatly by bands such as Nile, Suffocation, and Deeds of Flesh, so expect a non-stop assault of jackhammer drum blasts, churning riffage, and brutal death growls. Technically speaking, these guys can certainly crank it out, tunes like " Blood Commander", "Harmlessly Eaten", and the crushing title track contain plenty of acrobatic guitar, bass, and drum work, riffs devastating the landscape and drum blasts flailing away with reckless precision. Check out the wonderful guitar solo from Mert Kaya on the savage "No One Forgotten", as he almost hits a fusion tone reminiscant of Holdsworth, Satriani, or Vai, giving the listener a classy break from the pulversizing brutality, something he does on a few occasions throughout this release. The guy can rip for sure!

The production however on the CD is a tad on the dry side, reminding me of some of those late 80's/early 90's death & thrash records that contained plenty of fine tunes but suffered from a lack of budget to sink into some serious studio time with a quality producer. It's not that the mix is bad here, as you can hear all the parts with no problem, but it all lacks a certain 'oomph', the guitars just aren't massive enough, and that's a shame as the material, if not overly original, is pretty damn good.

As with many of the Unique Leader releases (and let's throw in rival Willowtip Records while we are at it) this one sports some wicked artwork courtesy of Par Olofsson, which adds to the whole extreme experience. Deformed Future//Genetic Nightmare shows plenty of promise for these lads from Turkey, and I'm sure we'll be hearing more from them in the near future. If technical, extreme death metal is your thing, you've come to the right place.
