Flegethon: Behind a Side of Times

Funeral Doom is not really my thing, and this CD lasting nearly 80 minutes, I kept pushing it aside. Well, I'll be damn! Behind a Side of Times is actually quite good and pleasant to listen to!

Flegethon started out as a duo back in 1999. Now, Oden is the solitary soul behind this Funeral Doom ship. Perhaps slow in pace as a genre, still releasing, on a steady basis, albums since 2000. Behind a Side of Times was originally released in 2005 on Satanarsa Records. The man from St-Petersburg has composed four lengthy songs, most of them clocking in at 20 minutes +, besides the short (16:11) closing track. Aside from the usual slow pace, heavy guitar/bass work with distortion and the pounding drums, Oden has come up with some original ideas. This disc is maybe the most varied and interesting Funeral Doom Metal release I've heard. This prolific artist worked his harmonies out through the funeral patterns. Ambient/ symphonic keyboard arrangements, clean arpeggios, leads, church organ, bells and calmer breaks join force to create the melodic passages amongst the mourning. Ghostly rasps and growls seem to appear from beyond, and even if the words are undecipherable, they add greatly to the misty / spooky atmosphere. Some little extras in the shape of industrial / psychedelic and experimental parts complete the experience.

Behind a Side of Times only includes high quality Funeral Doom music.
