Vision of Disorder: Dead in New York (DVD)

East Coast hardcore/thrash group Vision of Disorder was always known for their frenzied and brutal metal music along with concerts that resembled a stroll in downtown Baghdad more than the inside of a Long Island venue. Now you have the chance to see all the mayhem in its full glory thanks to Koch Records.

The DVD is filmed by Bill Yukich and like a lot of his work, suffers from the inability to hold a camera shot for more than about five seconds. While this technique may act to represent the frantic bedlam of a Vision of Disorder concert, it becomes old rather quickly if you are trying to view this as a fan of the band. Not to mention a lot of rewinding as you wonder what it is you just saw.

With all that, you do get a good idea of how much a battering a person received just by being a fan! The crowd is about as brutal as the music being played in front of them. Yukich manages to make the audience as much a part of this DVD as the band.

Now for the good part, the sound on this disc is fabulous. VOD is one of the bands credited with founding the metalcore scene and you most definitely get a mega dose of what they do best. The band gives a good assortment of metal anarchy from their first three albums and gives it 110% on stage. The ruthless attack is the fuel that drives the crowd into an absolute frenzy. Lead singer Tim Williams is on fire and continuously stokes the fire with his guttural vocals. Blistering riffage from the pair of guitarist Matt Baumbach and Mike Kennedy will pound you senseless from start to finish. There is only one speed for VOD and even when Williams says they are going to slow it down, it never drops below supersonic velocity.

Along with this you also get a history of the band that tells the story from the very start to the break-up on 2002 and subsequent reunion. This is a very interesting glimpse into the fast rise and equally quick end to a band that never really got their just due. This is one disc that if you can stand the chaotic camerawork is well worth checking out for a slice of metalcore history.
