If you thought that the guys in Dethklok were doomed and done for after the massive assault that was launched on them during the finale of "Metalocalypse" Season 1 then I am happy to report that the rumors of their deaths have been greatly exaggerated. Yes, the Tribunal and its legions tried their best and did a lot of damage but no band members were killed in the process. Now they have returned for Season 2 of the series and while it begins with the group in seclusion for fear of further attacks, the antics and mayhem that often come part in parcel during their daily routine is very much the same as it was during the first season. Despite their necessary seclusion the band seems hardly phased by the attacks and still treat each other as awful as they had in the earlier episodes. There is a lot of verbal and physical abuse going on and of course a whopping dose of very colorful language which seems to have been increased this time around. The misadventures that the group undertakes this time around finds them getting fashion upgrades, attending a family wedding and a funeral as well as becoming intervention specialists for a cocaine addled Dr. Rockzo. Of course each episode concludes with most of the surrounding cast of players being decimated and the band unscathed and unaffected but that is to be expected when one is talking about Dethklok. Legal Eagle Ofdensen tries his best at each and every turn to be the voice of reason to deaf ears and as result it's during one episode he finds himself being replaced by the band with someone cooler.
Of course the villainous Tribunal is not sitting idly by and are still plotting and planning the bands ultimate demise by continuing to try and infiltrate the bands camp as well as make use of the military force courtesy of General Dozier. The second season also shows us that it is not only the Tribunal who want the band dead by introducing the viewers to The Revengencers, who are a team of crazed ex-fans who used to "Die For Dethklok" and now prefer that the band very simply die. We also meet a group of crazed Amazon Warrior Women who have sinister designs of their own on the band with the key figure in their plan being Nathan Explosion. Without question there is a little bit of everything in the second season including a stint at government rule, a reunion with former band mates and doubles that can go out in the place of the band and do their appearances and keep them from harm. Little do they know the replacements are also planted in their ranks. Should any of this be confusing, well, you just need to sit down and watch the episodes to follow along I guess. Having watched and enjoyed the first season quite a bit, I did feel as a comic book/animation fan that there was more of a cohesive nature to the plots this time around and more continuity from episode to episode in terms of the story that was being told. They are definitely building up to something and while a lot of it comes to a head during the finale of Season Two, I will not divulge any secrets and say grab a copy of your own to see how it plays out. I neglected to mention any of the pre-requisite gore and don't worry yourself, because there is quite a bit more of that happening in the second season than I even remember happening in the first. This is definitely NC-17 kind of stuff when it comes down to it.
During the first season we found a number of Metal notables offering up guest voices for various characters that the band encountered along the way and we find a lot more of this happening with the episodes of Season Two. It reminded me a lot of how this happened when the Simpsons first began to run for as the series progressed and got more popular it was now fashionable to be a guest voice on the program. With "Metalocalypse" it seems to have become a part of the Metal chic to offer up your voice on behalf of Dethklok and their misadventures. While it's impossible to discern the actual voices at times based on how we Metal fans know their singing, the season delivers the talents of Angela Gossow, Silenoz, Emperor's Isahn, Samoth and Trym, and Devon Townsend among many others. You will just have to watch the credits to see who else is involved and we recommend that anyway since the action doesn't seem to stop until the Titmouse Studios graphic presents itself. It's safe to say that if you enjoyed what went on during the first season that the continuing saga of Dethklok will keep you interested for the second season. The show remains popular and keeps growing in scope as it reaches more and more Metal fans. At the time of this writing it was announced that a third season would be forthcoming which is good because the bands story is far too amusing and different to find it ending without any resolution. I am eagerly awaiting the next chapters in the tale.
