Sammath Naur: Self-Proclaimed Existence

Originally released in 2005 but now seeing its re-release thanks to Metal Mind Productions, Self-Proclaimed Existence is a furious display of symphonic black/death metal from Poland's Sammath Naur. Somewhat avant-garde and progressive in its approach, Self-Proclaimed Existence is much more than your typical extreme metal album, the band using keyboards, adventurous song structures, and two vocalists to deliver their sound, and it works.

"Three-Coloured Rhapsody of Dead Time" features plenty of raging death metal vocals, yet the guitar riffs and rhythms motor along with plenty of complexity, supported by an almost 'film score' styled keyboard arrangement, making for quite an entertaining listen. If you like 'epic', look no further than "Landscape of Liquid Colours", walls of synths playing against manic drum blasts, monstrous sweep picking, and effective growling vocals. These guys certainly have a flair for the dramatic, tracks like "A Hand Across the Galaxy", "All-Seeing Eye", and the furious title track, all showing the diversity and power of this band, screams and growls doing battle amidst a battlefield littered with crushing riffs, orchestral keyboards, tasty guitar leads, and pummeling rhythms. It's all very effective in the end, but there's a lot to take in here, so don't expect all the fruits of this little gem to appear on first listen, as Self-Proclaimed Existence in very rich and dense musically, warranting repeated listens to uncover all that this one is about. Chances are most of us missed this one when it first came out, so now's the time to investigate this little known band from Poland, who apparently are working on new material as we speak.
