Well this is not your conventional song writing with a verse and chorus structure. The songs here are used more to convey the mood of the setting in an organic way. The overall mood and sound of Spin Vows Under Arch is bleak and dark, but with a gentle softness to it. Nick Grey keeps things interesting by using different vocalist's, both male and female. He also incorporates many different acoustic instruments such as oboe, clarinet, accordion, strings, guitar, brass horns, piano, Celtic harp and percussion. There is also a lot of electronic trickery used to create sound effects for drones and background sounds. The song "Setting Expectations" has a very introspective feel to it and would not be out of place on an album like Pink Floyd's Ummagumma.
Well you have to be in right mood to listen to this CD and don't look for it to energize you in any way. This maybe of some interest to fans of bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor or people whom like listening to soundscapes.
