Modern Age Slavery, The: Damned to Blindness

Despite having possibly 2008's most gruesome cover art (seriously guys...), Damned to Blindness is actually quite the solid release from Italy's The Modern Age Slavery. Now signed to Napalm Records after only forming a year ago, The Modern Age Slavery play a brutal form of deathcore with some grind mixed in. Not much in the way of technicality or progressive flair, these guys opt for pummeling your brain cells for 40 minutes rather than titilate your senses with melody or intricate arrangements. However, "Drop By Drop" does feature some keyboards in the background and some weaving guitar lines, easily the most adventurous piece of the bunch, otherwise, expect plenty of blasting, brutal riffing, and no shortage of menacing growls and screams. Lead vocalist Giovanni Berselli sounds at times like he is emerging from the pits of hell, though his delivery can get grating as he doesn't vary his attack much here. Production wise this one sounds really good, and if you can appreciate the non-comprimising nature of this little slice of brutality, then you'll find a lot to like here. Toss in a few crushing breakdowns here and there, and a fun cover of the Emtombed classic "Wolverine Blues", and you have the makings of an extreme metal party straight out of Italy, a place not normally known for its death metal.
