I always think that there are never enough acoustic guitar parts in most Folk /Viking Metal. Well, Folkearth seems to have heard my complaint, since Songs of Yore is purely an acoustic album, filled with delicate guitar sounds.
I just love this album. The moment I found out it was coming, I instantly knew it would be right down my alley, and it surely is! Folk music is always a great pleasure to listen to, and the organic sound of acoustic guitars is gracing most compositions found on this disc. That is not all though, since eighteen musicians from nine different countries, including Canada, were involved to create this great epic / Celtic journey. The natural tonality of many classical and folkloric instruments could be enjoyed on Songs of Yore. To name but a few: violin, cello, Celtic harp, flute, recorder, accordion, mandolin, bodrian, as well as various type of percussions. Not all the songs included on this release are new material. Some songs were actually taken from their latest offering, Father of Victory, such as: "Charles Martel", "The Purest Breed", "The Iron Wolf", "The Will of Odin" and the title track.
No bad songs at all on this album, only very good to excellent compositions to be enjoyed. As an acoustic guitar player, I can just be thrilled and inspired by marvels like: "Remember Hastings", "The Will of Odin", and my overall favorite piece called "Homus Paganus".
