Agathodaimon: Chapter III (remaster)

The epic, melodic, gothic, symphonic black metal continues on the third release from Agathodaimon. Chapter III might just be the strongest of their early releases, equal parts savage and melodic, as the band abandons some of the reckless black metal aspects for a more heavy, crushing sound that still hints upon their earlier elements, but allows more variety to come into the mix. Akaias' vocals by this time are taking on a life of their own, and much like Dani Filth he portrays a wide variety of emotions and styles here, easily changing from deep growls to high pitched maniacal shrieks. "Paradise Beyond" is a good example of all he has to offer, his wild growls prove to be quite terrifying amidst pummeling blast beats and massive guitar riffs, the occasional gothic synths tempering the brutality only briefly before the band bludgeons you once again. Fans of Dimmu Borgir will love the raging "An Angel's Funeral" and "The Ending of Our Yesterday", two symphonic black metal treats, yet there's a hint of gothic nature to both that adds an insteresting element. The band goes full bore into the gothic camp with "Past Shadows", clean vocals, keys, and heavy grooves taking the cue, while "Departure" expands on that somewhat, injecting plenty of black metal fury into the mix as well. For an interesting twist, Agathodaimon also throw in some classical elements on "Sacred Divinity", and close out the CD with a barrage of black and death metal on "Burden of Time".

As with all the Metal Mind remasters of the old Nuclear Blast Agathodaimon releases, this one has superior sound, and a classy digipack complete with recreated artwork, lyrics, photos, and an essay. Chapter III is ultimately a must have addition to your symphonic black metal CD collection.
