Khold: Hundre Ar Gammal

Hundre Ar Gammal (which translates to 'Hundred Years Old') is the latest from Oslo, Norway 'black n roll' band Khold. Now on their fifth release, Khold once again deliver their brand of "Motorhead meets Darkthrone" styled black metal, with a touch of Hellhammer thrown in for good measure. As all their lyrics are in their native tongue, I can't give you any info on the themes for these 11 tracks, but musically this is your standard Khold fare, which is based in old-school style black metal, but the band throws in some classic rock, punk, and metal elements to toss things up just a bit. The title track is a slow, plodding piece that reminds of classic Hellhammer, while "Troles" and "Kor" have that sleazy, somewhat punky vibe that you get from modern Darkthrone. As a pure black metal album, Hundre Ar Gammal doesn't fare too well, though "Forrykt" and "Villfaren" do pick up the pace a bit with some tasty riffing and furious drums, and "Mester Og Trell" is fairly relentless from start to finish (blast beats, surprise!), but overall there's too much that's too similar here and stuck in the same sort of rut. For those who like their black metal either one of two ways, the 'necro' old fashoned kind, or the sexy 'symphonic' style, this is far from both, and in the end, not a bad CD, but nothing that's going to set the world on fire either. Khold seem to be staying very close to their raunchy, groove-laden black metal style from one release to the next, and while you can say that they are delivering decent product, after a while their catalog is starting to sound rather stale and stagnant, and this one's not doing anything to change that.
