Dark Funeral: Attera Orbis Terrarum-Part II (DVD)

Fans of Swedish black metal band Dark Funeral sure have been getting their money's worth lately with the release of the Attera Orbis Terrarum DVD sets, Part II is now available, a 2 disc collection of live blasphemy from the veteran band. This time around, the focus is on Dark Funeral's 2006 tour of South America in support of their album Attera Totus Sanctus, and features two full shows, one from Buenos Aires, Argentina (10/6/06), and one filmed in Sao Paulo, Brazil (9/23/06), plus close to an hour of fan footage from North and South America covering the years 1997-2007. As with the first DVD released in this series, the two full shows included here are virtually identical set-list wise (the only difference is "Godhate" at the Sao Paulo show) so for the casual fan this is a lot of the same material to digest twice. However, for hardcore fans of the black metal legends, these are two really enjoyable shows, the band on fire and really playing most of their best tunes. Of the two, the Buenos Aires show is the better looking show from a production standpoint, great camera work and visuals adorning this set, while the Sao Paulo show is more raw, and given a sort of 'grindhouse' look by the production team, at times there are odd choices of edits and footage superimposed over live shots that just don't seem to make sense. Back to the set-list though, it's killer all the way, classics such as "The Secrets of the Black Arts", "King Antichrist", "An Apprentice of Satan", "Open the Gates" (my personal favorite!), and "Vobiscum Satanas" among many others, played with the usual ferocity that you would expect from this act. On both of these shows, it's really apparent just how melodic the songs of Dark Funeral are despite the level of brutality. Lord Ahriman and Chaq Mol have a way of mixing in melodic, tremelo picked lines amidst the furious riffs, giving the music a very symphonic sound, almost as if they had keyboards playing these melodies in the background. It adds a great element to their otherwise fast paced, blast beat driven black metal. Lead singer, Emperor Magus Caligula, has proven to be one of the best frontmen in the genre, and he's in fine form on these shows, obviously very touched by the wonderful response the band gets on both these South America shows.

Bonus features on both DVD's here include numerous fan clips from throughout the year, the most intriguing coming on Disc 1, where you get various pieces of footage from North America, in places such as Chicago, New York, and a few spots in California, all of which are very raw, but they put you right in the audience for some "up close and personal" time with the band, in most cases as far back as a decade ago.

The 2DVD's come housed in a nice case, with a great booklet jammed with photos. As far as live black metal DVD's go, you can't go wrong with this or Part 1 in the series.
