A stylistically restless collection of songs that
bridges the gaps between gothic, black metal,
neoclassical rock (Yngwie Malmsteen), progressive and
even elements of various folk musics. At times, there
are brief bursts of majestic Gentle Giant-like
harmonies followed by atomic blasts of dark-of-night
demonic growls; elsewhere there are supremely
harmonized guitars, brilliantly executed lead runs
(the solos on the title track and "Enthralled By
Unknown Dimensions" are two of my favorite moments on this record) and a few somber acoustic passages of
note.
All of this does indeed add up to an interesting
(albeit somewhat slightly scattered) portrait. While
Masquerade is not in any sense a perfect record, the intriguing melodies, fascinating harmonies and curious sensibility shifts are worth the price of admission. A band to watch.
