Sad Sailor: Link To the Outside World

Sad Sailor are a seven piece collective from Omaha, and while my CD-R copy of their release Link To The Outside World offers very little in the way of information, the performances on this recording, which features three compositions and clocks in at just under thirty minutes, appear to be all improvised. This loose feel which can be felt throughout the recording is made all the more apparent by one of the members who can be heard counting the change as they go along. Boasting a lineup that features three guitarists, a cellist, bass and drums, plus a trumpet player unfortunately makes for a fairly convoluted listening experience here. While there are moments of melancholic beauty to be found courtesy of a few, delicate cello passages, too much of Link To The Outside World is invariably cluttered up with the dense and often disjointed guitar work. The band does do a pretty good job at gradually unfolding each track, building it up and tearing it down through some nice tension and release moments, yet I couldn't help but wonder how this music might have come across had it been allowed to breathe a bit more, for example without two guitarists. What melodies there are end up being sadly buried behind the dense wall of sound that too often meanders in search of a destination. In the end Link To The Outside World which is a combination of shoe gaze, folk and experimental rock, ultimately doesn't offer much, only a hint of what could have been.
