Aeons of Eclipse: The Hour of Desolation

The debut from Kentucky's Aeons of Eclipse shows plenty of promise for this brutal death metal band. The Hour of Desolation is chock full of heavy riffs, acrobatic lead solos & fills, machine-like drum blasts, and deep, deep vocal growls, everything you'd expect from an extreme death metal album. Though this is an indie recording, the production is pretty good, produced by the band and mastered by Colin Davis at Imperial Mastering, and it's all housed in a deliciously evil looking case with some impressive artwork from Vitaly s. Alexius. Most of the tracks rampage at hyper-speed, jackhammer blasts from Scott Briggs never ending in their intensity while Ryan Morkulven & Derek Boles churn out one massive riff after another. Scott Slinker is a formidable growler, showing his full arsenal on "Condemnation", laying down grunts and screams that will send shivers up and down your spine. Though these guys don't quite come close to acts like Decrepit Birth or Spawn of Possession in their quest for brutality & complexity, you can see that the seeds are starting to get planted here for something perhaps pretty special in the near future. What they seem to lack though at this point in time is the ability to but together meaningful and memorable riffs and songs-it's obvious they know how to play, but the band needs to take it now to the next level. In short, there's lots to like here, it just doesn't all quite come together like it should, but you gotta recognize the potential that Aeons of Eclipse has, so they will certainly be a death metal band to watch out for in the coming years.
