Beller, Bryan: To Nothing (DVD)

To Nothing is the 'sort of' companion DVD to go along with bassist/composer Bryan Beller's latest release Thanks In Advance. Here on this lengthy DVD, you get plenty of studio and rehearsal footage from the sessions that led up to the creation and recording of the latest CD. That being said, this will mostly be of interest to the loyal hardcore fans of the bass genius, although don't expect any bass clinics here. Instead, Bryan takes you through each track that made it to the CD, featuring footage of the many players that made it onto Thanks In Advance as they work with the bassist in recording the many melodic, jazz-fusion pieces. If you are a fan of studio recording, much of this will be of great interest, and though the footage has no doubt been edited down from what was certainly hours upon hours of video, you get a real sense for just how much work goes into the creation of an album, and especially a mostly instrumental album filled with challenging music. The highlight segment here is the footage of superstar guitarist/keyboard player Mike Keneally laying down his parts for the song "Love Terror Adrenaline/Break Through"-if you've heard Beller's latest, you know it's one of the hottest pieces on the CD, but watching Keneally ripping into his extended solo and learning all the complex arrangements in what seems like record time is pretty damn amazing. There's some fun gag reel stuff, plenty of interview segments with many of the musicians who made it onto the CD, a live clip, and some bonus audio tracks. Again, for the casual fan, this might be a tad too geeky, but if you love Beller's work and are a fan of solid fusion, this one comes recommended.
