Super stuff here, a two-disc live set from progressive metal act Between the Buried and Me, featuring a full show DVD and a companion CD with the Colors part of the set. Though I'm sure many will wonder why the full show was not made available on the CD, just having this near 2 hour killer of a set on the DVD is worth the price of admission alone. This was filmed on the Colors tour, the band's 2007 release that was up to this point the pinnacle of their career, a masterful combination of brutal death-core, technical progressive metal, and melodic prog-rock. Colors Live kicks off with the band playing the entire Colors album, taking the raucous audience through this twisting and turning album, complete with never ending time signature and meter changes, brutally heavy riffs, screaming & melodic vocals, keyboards, acrobatic guitar solos, and nimble rhythms. Tommy Rogers proves to be quite a capable frontman, whether screaming at the top of his lungs at center stage, or gently crooning behind his synth, and the expert guitar work of both Paul Waggoner & Dustie Waring is simply astounding. Colors is just a marvelous slice of extreme progressive metal, and the band pulls it off great here, "Ants of the Sky", "Viridian", and "White Walls" being the highlights, but really, this one is best taken in as one long piece, and it kills from start to finish.
Though the tracks are not on the CD, the band bashes through older numbers like "Aspirations", "Backwards Marathon", and a few others on the DVD, giving fans a near 2 hour live experience that you won't soon forget. In addition, there's a fun documentary and plenty of other bonus goodies here. The sound and production work on the DVD portion is very well done, helping make this one of the 'must have' live album purchases this year for progressive metal fans of all ages.
