Destruction: D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.

Schmier, Mike and Marc have been continuously producing great thrash metal for the past 25 years. For the anniversary, they have unleashed another in a long line of worthwhile releases with the powerhouse D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N. Never relenting, Destruction gives you 10 more examples of what has made them a force in the world of thrash. While the album does not take MANY challenges, they do have a few examples of spreading their wings. Yes, you will definitely know who this is within the first few bars, but there is also some twist and turns along the way. "Urge (The Greed Of Gain)" gives them a bit more of a melodic sound at times. "Vicious Circle/The Seven Deadly Sins" is a piece that captures a deep brooding darkness with its eerie chanting to open and close the song. It almost borders on death metal!

While fans of old will fully appreciate what they have done on this album, I am sure that they will also bring many more legions into the fold with this release. Schmeir's snarling vocals are as strong as ever. Mike and his six string are on fire throughout this disc! Behind it all Marc delivers a powerful performance on the drums that will have you banging heads with anyone nearby.

While these guys are as brutal as ever, (Devolution, Inner Indulgence) they also show you that they are not a one dimensional band. As a matter of fact, I would put it down to the 25 years that the band has behind them. This album shows a maturity and musical evolution that can only come from experience.

This disc is a real tasty morsel for anyone who wants to exercise those neck muscles. There is no doubt that a little head banging is in your future.

My Score:

This one has one of the worst production, mix and mastering combinations of the year. Between this, Southern Storm (Krisiun), and Metallica, metal has sunken to new lows in terms of sonic representaion. Not to say that the songs are bad...Just unlistenable for any duration of time. The digital storm rages on. Devolution indeed!!!
